A beginners' guide to the Web:
TechTalk and glossary of terms

Browser:  the software designed to display various kinds of Internet documents, images and HTML files on your computer.  Netscape Communicator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer are the two most commonly used browsers, though there are dozens more.

FTP:  stands for File Transfer Protocol, the most common method of moving files from one Internet site to another.

HTML:  HyperText Mark-up Language is the file format and coding language for documents and pages on the Web.

Hyperlink (also known as hotlink or hypertext link):  a word or image that is highlighted or underlined and linked to another web page or site.  When you click on a hyperlink, you will be taken to a related page anywhere in the world.  You can tell you've encountered a hyperlink when your cursor arrow all of a sudden becomes a pointing hand.  The interconnecting network of hyperlinks is what gave rise to the notion of the Internet as a "web" of networks, the World Wide Web.

Meta tags:  are lines of HTML coding designed to boost the possibility that search engines will be able to find you.  Because browsers don't display them, many web viewers don't realize they exist.  Title, Description and Keywords are the most essential types of meta tags.  Others include Author, Content and the Alt tags which provide written descriptions of the photographs and graphics on your site.  Meta tags are important!

Spam:  On-line junk mail, that seems to show up more and more often in your Inbox.
